Using Herbs for Pets
You can replace many commercial products with natural herbal ones and get great, non-toxic results for your pets. Flea Protection Add Brewer’s Yeast to food along with Vitamin B complex. This combo is inviting to some pets, but others need to be induced to eat it by mixing it with something “smelly” like water from a can of tuna or perhaps cod liver oil which cats usually love. These healthy additions to your pet’s diet will keep coats glossy and skin healthy, too. Cedar shavings added to your pet’s bed will permeate the coat with the scent of cedar, which deters fleas.
Add some garlic powder to the food. Many dogs like garlic, so experiment with your pet by adding powder, not garlic salt, to the food. Fresh garlic is less likely to be acceptable. Cats rarely like garlic, but if yours happens to, it will repel fleas. Although humans generally love the scent of lavender, insects hate it, so try adding dried lavender to the pet sleeping area. This gives a fresh scent as well as protection from fleas. Herbal wash – Add rosemary to a pot of boiling water, steep for at least 15 minutes. When it is cool enough to use, wash your dog with this “rosemary tea”. If your dog doesn’t like to take a bath, just dip a cloth in the tea and rub over the coat. Cats will tolerate this washing method, too. Odor Control To dry clean your dog, sprinkle him with baking soda and let this stay on for as long as you can keep your dog still. Then brush it out, being careful not to let the dog lick it because their digestive system can’t tolerate much baking soda. This treatment removes excessive oil without harsh stripping from some shampoos. This reduces odor significantly. Don’t try this for your cat, as they lick themselves so thoroughly that they will make themselves ill. Try these other deodorants for a cat litter box: Lovage, Peppermint, Thyme, Baking Soda mixed with the litter. Pet Safe Insect Killer Each year many pets are poisoned by insect poison and rodent poisons. You must deal with your insect problem without endangering your pet. This is worth a good try – combine equal parts of sugar and baking soda and place where insects can find and eat it. The sugar attracts them and the soda kills them. While this won’t kill you pet if he heats it, it could make him ill, so place it where he can’t reach it. |
